NINE

As they sat by the fire enjoying their wine, Brady noted a CD on an end table. He picked it up with pleased surprise. “A Wainwright Family Christmas. Hey, is this yours?”

“Yeah, I kind of have a little crush on Rufus Wainwright. Dreamy voice,” Eric said, his own voice dreamy as his eyelids dropped into a subconscious flutter.

Brady knew it had to be subconscious because Eric’s few attempts at seduction had been anything but subtle. The fact that he wasn’t even trying now made the soft voice and half-lidded eyes all the more tempting. “Mind if I put it on?”

“Go ahead. The stereo’s right over there,” he said, pointing to a cabinet near the bar.

“What’s Christmas Eve without music?”

“You’re right,” he agreed. “We should have thought of it sooner.”

Brady inserted the CD and cheerfully sappy Christmas music filled the air. “That’s better,” he said.

“Hmm.”

Eric pulled his hair free of the elastic that habitually held his dark wavy hair in a tail down his back. The motion was subtly erotic and Brady stifled a groan as Eric combed his fingers through it, strands catching the firelight in shimmery caramel highlights. He was gorgeous in that elegant white v-neck and jeans, his deep brown eyes sparkling in the soft light. Outside the windows, snow fell lightly, gently streaking the darkness. It was Brady’s best Christmas Eve in recent memory. Maybe ever. “You look really nice tonight,” he said, his voice growing raspy. “Beautiful.”

“Thanks,” he said, his eyes locked on his. “I was just thinking that you look pretty good too.”

Brady knew what he was going to do next, knew all the reasons he shouldn’t, but the temptation was too strong. Here he was, alone with a gorgeous man on Christmas Eve, and Brady could think of only one thing he wanted—to close the distance between them. He’d been longing to hold Eric all week, and now he had the perfect excuse. He approached the slender man and set down his wine. “Care to dance?”

Brady held out his hand and Eric took it, brown eyes shining as Brady lifted him to his feet, and then into Brady’s arms. His lithe body was warm, fitting against Brady so nicely. The soft angora yarn of his sweater invited Brady to rub circles in the small of Eric’s back as he guided him in ever decreasing circles.

Firelight cast shadows on the wall as they gently swayed to the music. Brady pulled Eric close, the resulting sigh from the slighter man making Brady’s heart beat a little faster. Brady had the feeling he was falling, sinking into depths he’d never known. As long as Eric went there with him, he didn’t care if they ever came back.

At last, the CD ended and Eric looked up into Brady’s eyes. There was a longing easily read there. Brady led him to the threshold separating the great room from the kitchen. His voice was husky with desire as he spoke below the mistletoe. “It’s not such a silly tradition.”

“No...” he said, tilting up his chin.
